Why must everything be accompanied by background music. What is wrong with people that think music put over serious, in depth topics somehow enhances, or captures the audience. The listener wants to hear the person speaking, not have his brain and emotions changed by some rubbish, mood background music. No wonder IQ's are dropping.

Probably the first time I've listened to one of TMs lectures in nearly a decade and I still barely understand what he's getting at and at the same time questioning whether any of this has any relevance to nowadays and thinking I understand some of the things all at the same time. I wanna say I'm a midwit but maybe I'm just lazy? I'm just a clueless wannabe scholar I guess. Can somebody help me please!?!

There is a thing where, when you talk about populations of people, and their problems, it artificially makes you seem like you're an external observer of the problem. Some people will be fooled into the false presupposition that you have access to ethical "oughts" from the "ises" you describe. Terrence was just a dude, like any other dude, but his psychological standpoint, views humans as a problem, yet he insists on living to tell the tale.

Just started re-visiting Terrence. UNBELIEVABLE...his intelligence, beautiful use of language & unique grasp on imagination still blow my mi9nd when I listen to him.

Terrence McKenna was the most adroit and mentally agile wordsmith of the last quarter of the 20th century.Would love to have seen him together with George Carlin.

I think it was probably Claviceps and I think people were dying at times, but I don't think dying from drugs in a ritual of death and resurrection, was uncommon and regarded as bad in a cult setting. (Just thinking about Jesus Christ croaking on the."pole" (σταυρόν). Although Mark was probably more mythology than history). But, to die in a cult, setting, probably isn't so bad in hindsight... Depending on what is written about it 😂 History is full of death (and resurrection) myths!

This was always my favorite subtopic discussed by Terence, and this particular description of psilocybin here is hands down the most accurate synoptic assessment I've ever heard even compared to his other talks. What he's talking about here (whether he realizes it or not) is the concept known as "aboutness", but is also more often referred to as "intentionality". Basically, it's the notion that the content of the mind can be 'about' something or aimed at some particular state of affairs and have a certain directionality. He takes the hermeneutical approach to psychedelic phenomenology, which is actually extremely useful considering they genuinely appear to be largely intersubjective and 'universal'. Although he admitted himself that his smoked DMT descriptions seemed pretty radically different from other peoples', it still was more or less evident that his hermeneutic exegesis of the symbol systems present in the ayahuasca and psilocybin experiences were very generalizable and accurate. Yes, psilocybin is very much outer-space oriented and ayahuasca is clearly predicated towards going in the more 'Gaian', earth-oriented direction. However, I do feel Terence missed or left-out some key prefaces and nuances. For instance, how the psilocybin experience seems to actually also overlap with the ayahuasca experience (which can be the source of much confusion/contention over all this) or how psilocybin seems also very themed around 'knowledge' in the same or similar way ayahuasca is themed around 'healing'. Ayahuasca and mushrooms seem to have a deep, dichotomous relationship. They also seem to have 'vague' trichotomous relationships to things like iboga and datura but I wont get into that.
